About Us
Established in July 1996, the Children in Distress Network (CINDI) is a collaborative network of civil society organizations dedicated to creating effective and sustainable programs for vulnerable children, adolescents, and youth, with a particular emphasis on women and caregivers. Our work is focused on supporting beneficiaries who have been impacted by HIV and AIDS in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province, while also advocating for better policies and greater resources at both the national and international level.
CINDI is a Prime Partner of USAID and has been a Sub-Partner of KZN Provincial Treasury Global Fund Supported Programme, Family for Every Child, and the European Union. Over the past 21 years, CINDI has been implementing child and youth programmes through its CBO and NGO network members in KZN as well as advocating for a more supportive and responsive policy environment within the KZN Province and Nationally. We participate in various national and provincial networks in this regard including the District and Provincial AIDS Councils, the local Welfare Forum, the National Child Care and Protection Forum, the Child Rights Network coordinated by the Children’s Institute at UCT, and the Social Assistance Coalition coordinated by the Black Sash. We are also members of ISPCAN internationally and the global alliance Family for Every Child. CINDI has worked on creating a solid foundation to ensure sustained capacity to provide services to the Member organisations as per the mandate enshrined in the CINDI constitution.
CINDI's
Impact through Partnerships and Innovative Programs
Our membership includes 240 organisations, with 80% being community-based organizations (CBOs) and the remaining 20% being non-governmental organizations (NGOs). For the last 23 years, CINDI has been implementing child and youth rights programs through our extensive network of CBO and NGO partners in KZN. Over the past 14 years, we have successfully implemented programs for orphans, vulnerable children, adolescents, and youth (OVCA&Y) in uMgungundlovu and eThekwini districts, using culturally appropriate and innovative methodologies.
We are proud to have served as a prime partner of USAID and as a sub-partner of the KZN Provincial Treasury Global Fund Supported Program, Family for Every Child, and the European Union. Our advocacy work includes participation in various national and provincial networks, such as the District and Provincial AIDS Councils, the National Child Care and Protection Forum, and the Child Rights Network coordinated by the Children’s Institute at UCT, among others.
At CINDI, we are committed to creating a solid foundation that ensures sustained capacity to provide services to our member organizations in line with our mandate. Through our efforts, we hope to continue to improve the lives of vulnerable children, adolescents, and youth in KZN and beyond.
